Republicans Say Have Votes to Ban Filibusters - Yahoo! News

Republicans Say Have Votes to Ban Filibusters - Yahoo! News

I'm reminded of a time when the Republican party was so angry at President Roosevelt and the Democratic party for dominating the depression and war years of the office they wanted to pass a law preventing any popular Democrat from ever serving more than two terms again.

How does this end you ask? They succeeded in getting a constitutional amendment to prevent future presidents from seeking more than two terms. However, what they didn't expect is the first president effected by this law wasn't a Democrat, but rather was a Republican. Eisenhower left office with enough residual popularity to have easily carried a third term.

But, surely enough, it wasn't just the karmic irony of the very next president being popular enough to carry the election ... correct you are ... the next president to be effected by term limits, was ... Ronald Reagan. Known for his strong tries to the Democratic party, right?

Since the amendment passed preventing running for that third term, three Republican presidents (including the current monkey) have been effected by this law, and only one Democrat president, Clinton.

The moral of this story? Sore losers loose big. Something like this may be perceived to further the agenda through non-democratic means (Eliminating the opponent's vote in judicial nominees is not quite the epitome of democratic process). While this may serve the short term goals of getting a single justice appointed who will assist them in overturning Roe v. Wade, the public backlash will ensure that there will be three justices appointed under President Warner, or President Dean, or President Obama who will not only reinstate Roe, but will require a same-sex marriage provision to all Americans, eliminate the death penalty, and make the drug war illegal.

Short sighted, power mongering republicans are unlikely to see this. They believe this is their calling and were put in power by God to make these changes. I'm going to be very happy to see that at some point, God will be out of work.
